The Old Man and the Blackbird

The blackbird sits by the window.

Waiting for his friend to rise.

The old man wakes up and walks slowly to the window.

He opens it just slightly to let his friend in.

“How are you feeling,” the blackbird asks.

“Tired, but fine my friend,” the old man replies.

The blackbird shakes his feathers and looks the old man up and down.

“You haven’t been eating much, have you,” says the blackbird.

The old man answers, “just a little here and there.”

“You have to keep your strength up, so you can enjoy this beautiful day,” the blackbird replies.

“I really don’t feel like going outside.  I feel tired today. It’s been a long week.  I can’t stop thinking of Martha.”

“Martha will always be with you my friend.  I promised her, I would watch over you.”

The old man stops for a moment to think, then answers, “I remember when I found you under the tree, you were so small.  I brought you home and Martha made you a tiny bed.  As you got older, you would go outside, but always come back.”

The blackbird replied, “you and Martha will always be my family.  Now it’s time to take care of you.”

“What will happen when my time comes, my friend, where will you go?”

“I will still be with you, just like Martha.  You need not worry.  Now, please eat something.”

So, the old man sat down at the table, took a sip of wine and sliced some bread. He tore a piece of bread, to give to his friend.  That night the old man celebrated with a plate of sausage and cheese.

His mind was now at ease, knowing the blackbird was indeed a true friend.

How To Be Happier And Enjoy Life

Check out “The Return of the Modern Philosopher.” Austin is a fantastic writer.

The Return of the Modern Philosopher

bad dateI’ve received many emails from Modern Philosophers who aren’t out in the dating world, asking me to write a dating tips style post to help with other life issues.

I tasked the interns with contacting all of you to see what kind of life tips you’d like, but since this blog has almost 14,000 followers, one of them might not have gotten to you yet.  Please be patient.

In the meantime, an overwhelming number of those contacted asked for tips on how to be happier and better enjoy life.

Challenge accepted, Modern Philosophers!

I don’t think this is a problem that can be solved in one post, so tonight’s article will focus on identifying the things that might be making you unhappy.  Once you figure out what’s causing the unhappiness, you can work on being happy.

Make sense?  Good.  Here’s my best guess as to what’s got you down…

happy 1You…

Ode to Veruca

As I started thinking, of all the different candy that is made, it made me think of Veruca in Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory.

So, this one is for you Veruca…

I want it now, I want it now!

It’s mine, It’s mine!

I want candy, all the time.

Peanut brittle, give me more.

Candy corn, here I go.

Bubble gum, yum yum.

Toffee and lollie’s, make me jolly.

Candy is yummy, sweet for my tummy.

I want Butterscotch and peppermint sticks.

Malted balls, that will do the trick.

More salt water taffy and cotton candy!

Jelly beans any kind, I don’t mind.

Carmel and gobstoppers, now I’m in trouble.

Feeling sick, darn those goobers and pixy sticks.

Oh my, what’s next?

No black licorice for me, but I’ll try a chocolate kiss.

I love Bon bons and white chocolate.

Peanut butter cups, are the best.

I forgot the rock candy, sitting in the dish.

Jaw breakers, might do me in.

I’m getting sick as sin.

Chocolate nuts and chocolate bars, I think I have taken this too far.

What’s that noise? Oh, its mom!

I have a candy wrapper stuck to my arm!

I jump in bed, sick as can be.

Mom comes in and looks at me.

What’s that smudge on your check?

Oh, I just ate one of my sweet treats.   😉

Hugs for my sweet Winnie-the-Pooh…

Hugs for me… Hugs for you…

Hugs for my sweet Winnie-the-Pooh.

Scampering over the hills, with Winnie, Roo and Christopher Robin too.

Oh!  What fun we will have on this bright sunny day.

Come on Rabbit, let’s play!

Oh!  Where can Piglet be?  Is that Eeyore by the tree?

I am hiding behind the bush, hoping to be free, from a tag, so no one can see me.

What’s that noise I hear?  Its Owl in the tree!

Oh dear, I whisper, please don’t tell on me.

I run from my spot and go up the hill.

Hair in my eyes, I run into Roo.

Tigger comes bouncing by full of glee.

We must go find Kanga, to have a cup of tea.

Pooh says, “What about honey, instead of tea?”

Here comes Eeyore and Piglet, now I am happy as can be.

This day has been wonderful, with having all my friends to see.

You wave goodbye…

Writing 201:  Poetry.  Day Seven: Fingers, Prose Poem, Assonance

You wave goodbye

I glance at my hands

I see the roughness

The white spots and veins

Age begins to take its toll

I used to write well…

Now it hurts to hold a pen

Sometimes the pain is excruciating

I massage them with care

Appreciating each finger

When I’ve seen cracks I took care of you

Every two weeks, I made sure to get you a makeover

My friend we’ve been through a lot

At times we’ve carried over 6 bags

When we should have only carried two

I never really thought about you and all the work you do

Now as I look you over, brown spots and all,

I  will make sure to give you my all
