The Old Man and the Blackbird

The blackbird sits by the window.

Waiting for his friend to rise.

The old man wakes up and walks slowly to the window.

He opens it just slightly to let his friend in.

“How are you feeling,” the blackbird asks.

“Tired, but fine my friend,” the old man replies.

The blackbird shakes his feathers and looks the old man up and down.

“You haven’t been eating much, have you,” says the blackbird.

The old man answers, “just a little here and there.”

“You have to keep your strength up, so you can enjoy this beautiful day,” the blackbird replies.

“I really don’t feel like going outside.  I feel tired today. It’s been a long week.  I can’t stop thinking of Martha.”

“Martha will always be with you my friend.  I promised her, I would watch over you.”

The old man stops for a moment to think, then answers, “I remember when I found you under the tree, you were so small.  I brought you home and Martha made you a tiny bed.  As you got older, you would go outside, but always come back.”

The blackbird replied, “you and Martha will always be my family.  Now it’s time to take care of you.”

“What will happen when my time comes, my friend, where will you go?”

“I will still be with you, just like Martha.  You need not worry.  Now, please eat something.”

So, the old man sat down at the table, took a sip of wine and sliced some bread. He tore a piece of bread, to give to his friend.  That night the old man celebrated with a plate of sausage and cheese.

His mind was now at ease, knowing the blackbird was indeed a true friend.

The Return of the Modern Philosopher

bad dateI’ve received many emails from Modern Philosophers who aren’t out in the dating world, asking me to write a dating tips style post to help with other life issues.

I tasked the interns with contacting all of you to see what kind of life tips you’d like, but since this blog has almost 14,000 followers, one of them might not have gotten to you yet.  Please be patient.

In the meantime, an overwhelming number of those contacted asked for tips on how to be happier and better enjoy life.

Challenge accepted, Modern Philosophers!

I don’t think this is a problem that can be solved in one post, so tonight’s article will focus on identifying the things that might be making you unhappy.  Once you figure out what’s causing the unhappiness, you can work on being happy.

Make sense?  Good.  Here’s my best guess as to what’s got you down…

happy 1You…

Your cheatin’ heart, is what drove us apart

Please don’t go.

I am so sorry.

You know, I love you.

Give me another chance.

I will change, you will see.

Maybe, you should have been nicer to me.

Don’t leave….  But, I  love you.

How can you leave me?

It was only once, it won’t happen again.

Your leaving, because of that?

It doesn’t mean anything.

I was just…  I don’t know.

I really do love you honey.

You are my world.

How can u do this to me?

******

To you…?

Well, let me see.

You say you love me, but you don’t.

Your cheatin’ heart, is what drove us apart.

I can’t trust you, I never will.

Nicer to you?

You treated me like an old shoe.

You won’t change,  it never happens.

I need to be free, from your obsession.

You never treated me, with an ounce of  dignity.

I hope you find, what you’re looking for.

It’s not going to be me anymore.

I am stronger, then you know.

I am finally, walking out the door.

Spider has just claimed victory, on my old wooden chest…

I open the rusty latch on the barn door.

The moment I step inside, I feel sick.

I can see the old wooden chest in the corner.

I raise my hands over my head,

making sure I don’t run into a spider’s web

As the light shines through, it produces a new clue.

A web hangs in the corner of the barn.

“Are u scared?  The spider seems to ask.”

Why am I scared when it’s just a thread?

A design of beauty, with a deadly scare.

The closer I get, my heart beats faster,

Just another second, won’t matter.

Felling uneasy, with each step I take,

I get chills down my spine and sweat on my face.

The large web glistens up high over my chest,

I just can’t, I can’t take another step.

The spider has just claimed victory, on my old wooden chest.

Fact or Fiction…

As I lay in bed, I can see the tree’s shadow dancing on my walls.

It’s a cold and windy night, a storm is approaching.

Sometimes, I feel the wind will rip the roof right off.

I am all by myself, about 30 miles out-of-town.

It’s almost midnight and the wind is blowing hard.

I always get a strange feeling at night, when the clock strikes 12.

I try my best to get comfortable, trying not to think, that I am all alone.

All of a sudden, I hear a loud noise outside. The noise gets closer and closer.

Something is outside, running around my place. It’s so close, I can hear it breathing.
